As a private practice owner I know behaviors at daycare can be of concern for our little ones with language delays. Parents worry that children are having a hard time communicating as daycares are reporting behaviors such as biting, pushing/hitting, and eloping.
Many parents don't have the luxury to pick up their child every time an incident happens and daycares do the best they can to keep all children safe while helping our little ones get the help they need to overcome these behaviors.
Explicitly teaching children appropriate social skills and giving them an opportunity to use those learned skills in small groups with trained therapists is one way we try to help address these concerns. We've worked with local daycares on a weekly basis as well as offer our Summer Social Skills Groups for 6 weeks while children are out of their normal/typical routines.
Through our professional experience we have also found other professions helpful with these concerns such as ABA therapy or Occupational Therapist who target sensory needs.
Regardless of how you choose to get help, know that advocating for your child and getting the right support around you will help get you through. Ask your child's teacher and current support team what resources they may know of. If you're local always check out our home page (at the bottom we provide links to resources around us!) for more information.
